Kaffihús

Heimatilbúið og gómsætt

The house was built for the local authorities in 1930. A skyr factory was built on the ground floor and apartments for the staff were on the second floor. Since 1947 a hotel and a restaurant business has been operated in the building. The house, or „Þinghúsið“ as the locals like to call it, has been a cultural meeting point for decades.

Skyrgerðin started its business the 11th of June 2016 and has given the house its old purpose as a roof over hotel and a restaurant business. They also honour the buildings original purpose as a skyr factory, but you can find skyr in many of the delicious courses on the menu.

For the group menu, please get in touch via the form below, or send an email to info (a.t) skyrgerdin.is for group menu availability and pricing.

Skyrgerðin

Gömul hefð endurvakin

Árið 1930 byggði Mjólkurbú Ölfusinga skyrgerð á jarðhæð þinghússins í Hveragerði. Þar var framleitt skyr sem var ein helsta söluvara búsins. Frá miðri síðustu öld hefur hótel- og veitingastaðarekstur verið í húsinu og þinghúsið hefur verið nokkurs konar menningarsetur Hvergerðinga og á tímabili einn aðal samkomustaðurinn.

Þann 11. júní 2016 hófst rekstur Skyrgerðarinnar upp á nýtt og hefur húsið endurheimt sitt gamla hlutverk sem þak yfir hótel- og veitingastaðarekstur. Einnig er sögu hússins sem skyrgerð haldið á lofti en finna má skyr í mörgum réttum staðarins.

Sagan

Sögulegur staður í hjarta bæjarins

Looking back to the history and heritage of the building that houses Skyrgerðin, the Ölfushreppur (Ölfus County) built the Þinghúsið building in 1930 and the Dairy Association of Ölfushreppur, Ölfus County, established the Skyrgerðin (Skyr Plant) on the ground level of the building at the same time.

The building was designed by Guðjón Samúelsson, the head architect of Iceland. He was the main designer of many of Iceland’s most beautiful buildings from this era. The Skyrgerðin produced skyr, which was one of the main products of the Dairy Association. Also, they were the first manufacturer of yogurt in Iceland, selling it in glass bottles and called it healthy milk.

Ever since the building was built for the parliamentary business and dairy production it has been the heart of Hveragerði. From mid last century, the building has been a hotel and a restaurant and the Þinghúsið has been the cultural centre of Hveragerði. For an extended amount of a time, it was the only community centre of the town. For example, it was used for exhibitions, cinema, weddings, dancing and concerts by well-known musicians..
